City Secrets: Dinner at the Coffee Bar

(added few years ago!)

Cofeesbar.com - By day, Coffee Bar in San Francisco's Mission district is a sleek destination for caffeine.  Scores of tele-workers tap on laptops as the staff serves up espresso drinks a cut above other coffee bars.

However, the bottles of wine behind the metallic bar should be your first clue that, come nighttime, this place is more bar than coffee.

Coffee Bar does make its sandwich menu available until shortly before closing time, usually around 10:30.  However the real action is on Thursday and Friday nights, when Radio Africa & Kitchen sets up shop and serves up a spectacular produce-driven meal, accompanied by a variety of African music styles.

Chef Eskender Aseged started doing these nomadic underground dinners when he worked as a waiter.  The effort has bounced around, but now finds a steady home at Coffee Bar every Thursday and Friday night.

His menus evoke the countries along the Mediterranean and Red Sea.  Meze plates, like cumin-crusted yellowtail tuna with green beans, or arugula salad with Dungeness crab crostini run $6 each, or $25 for a plate of all five offerings.  Entrees are usually between $16 and $20.  Last week diners could order striped sea bass with Ethiopian berbere sauce, chicken breast with Moroccan olives and preserved lemon, or eggplant and goat cheese gratin.
