Love for cooking results in a 'Honee B' of a restaurant

Angela Gibbs developed a love for home cooking as a child. She felt at home in the kitchen learning family recipes from her mother. It was a place I felt I belonged,” Gibbs said. She still does.

But she is now sharing these recipes, some of which are more than 50 years old, with the Murfreesboro community through her new restaurant Honee B’s Kafe.

Honee B’s Kafe is a meat-and-three restaurant, serving up the kind of roast beef, fried chicken, meatloaf and macaroni and cheese that you only wished your mother could make.

“We are the only type of restaurant of our kind on this side of town — period,” Gibbs said, which along with the quality of the food she serves makes her confident in opening her own restaurant on the west side of Murfreesboro.

Even though the odds may be against her, Gibbs said she did her homework before deciding to open her restaurant.saw a niche she could fill on that side of town and an opportunity to win over customers from all over the city with her high-quality food.

Honee B’s Kafe is located at 2805 Old Fort Pkwy., Suite M next door to Dippin’ Dots and across the street from Kelton’s.We hold quality way up here,” Gibbs said as she holds her hand way above her head.

She just hopes that word of her homemade and freshly prepared food rapidly spreads throughout the growing community. None of Gibbs’ food comes from a can and there isn’t even a microwave in the restaurant.

Gibbs is sure that if she can get patrons in once that they will come back.Even the unusual name of Gibbs’ restaurant came from her family. Honee was her grandmother’s nickname.

“When I opened my restaurant, that is the first name that popped into my head,” she said.B’ is her mother’s nickname, the initial of her dad’s middle name and the initial of her grandfather’s nickname.

The most important ‘B’ of all is blessed,” Gibbs said. “I am truly blessed to be here. I am truly blessed,” she continued. “This place is truly God sent.”Opening her own restaurant is the culmination of a life’s dream and something Gibbs was being trained for nearly all of her life.

Her mother, Eugenia Henderson, opened and operated barbecue and KFC restaurants in Louisville, Ky.That was my start in the restaurant business,” she said.Gibbs was working in her family’s restaurants from around the age of 7. By 16, she was managing many of the restaurants.

When she moved to Murfreesboro more than 20 years ago, she spent time managing the Krystal’s and then the Hardee’s restaurants on Northwest Broad Street.Gibbs left the restaurant business, which requires long hours, about 12 years ago so she could spend more time with her children.

But for the past two years, she has slowly grown a fan base for her food by selling it to co-workers at Mahle Filter Systems. Her food’s popularity brought back her desire to open her own restaurant. They used to buy all of my food,” Gibbs said of her former co-workers. “They are part of the reason why I am here today.”

One of those co-workers, Lisa Bush, believed in Gibbs cooking so much that she agreed to leave her job and serve as her business analyst. We have been talking about this for about two years,” Bush said. “I knew she could make this happen. We had a big vision.”

Part of that vision includes opening up a second Honee B’s Kafe in two years. Now, Gibbs wants her restaurant to be the solution for busy families that need good food fast.

Freshly prepared family packs are available with at least two hours notice. The restaurant also features a brunch on Sunday afternoons. We are trying to bring families back together one dinner at a time,” she said.
