Canada a mecca for music industry analysis

Posted in : Industry Updates

(added few years ago!)

Canada a mecca for music industry analysisCanada is home to five times as many music-industry businesses per capita than the United States, according to new analysis from the University of Toronto's Martin Prosperity Institute. The Great Musical North has 5.9 record labels, distributors, recording studios and music publishers per 100,000 residents, compared to just 1.2 in the U.S., and Canada's musical talent is more spread out among a diverse range of cities. "In 2009, there's nothing that forces you to be in a big city to play music," said researcher Ian Swain. "You could conceivably record music on your computer in Nunavut, but people obviously cluster in certain cities.

Waist-long diamond necklaces among the surprises
By Bernadette Morra
Waist-length necklaces, yellow diamonds and gold, and diamonds worn in unexpected ways emerged as the top jewelry news at the 2009 Screen Actors Guild awards.

Christina Applegate draped two strands of Lorraine Schwartz diamonds reaching down to her navel over an emerald green Ungaro gown. Jenna Fischer also doubled up on diamond strands. Hers were by Neil Lane, and worn with one chain shorter than the other. A huge diamond pendant swung from the longer strand.

Several stars went for colour including Penelope Cruz whose black velvet Azzedine Alaia gown got a kick from 6 carat orange spinel earrings and a rare sugarloaf ruby square cut ring, both by Chopard. Chopard also outfitted Kate Winslet with 22 carat pear-shaped diamond drops and a 39 carat three row diamond bracelet.

Keep cooking simple for this finger food

Posted in : abcd

(added few years ago!)

Cooking age.com - Serving chicken wings on Super Bowl Sunday is a natural, whether you cheer for the Pittsburgh Steelers or the Arizona Cardinals this weekend.

Nothing could be better than a menu of chicken wings, deviled eggs, tortilla chips with avocado dip, casseroles of macaroni and cheese, and baked beans. For dessert serve homemade brownies.

The tender meat and the crispy crust of a pan-fried or baked chicken wing is delicious anytime. Granted, this finger food can be messy, especially if you slather on a sauce or baste it with a glaze. But you can keep it simple and easy, and supply your guests with plenty of napkins.

On Super Bowl weekend more wings are sold than any other time of the year, says Debbie Moose, author of Wings: More Than 50 High-Flying Recipes for America’s Favorite Snack (Wiley, $16.95).

The National Chicken Council projects that 1 billion wing portions will be consumed during Super Bowl weekend, which is more than 90 million pounds of wings. In 2008, about 12 billion chicken wings (2.55 billion pounds) were marketed as wings (as opposed to wings on whole chicken or breast quarters). Of these, 3.5 billion wings were sold through food-service channels. Another 3.5 billion wings were sold in retail grocery stores.

City Secrets: Dinner at the Coffee Bar

Posted in : abcd

(added few years ago!)

Cofeesbar.com - By day, Coffee Bar in San Francisco's Mission district is a sleek destination for caffeine.  Scores of tele-workers tap on laptops as the staff serves up espresso drinks a cut above other coffee bars.

However, the bottles of wine behind the metallic bar should be your first clue that, come nighttime, this place is more bar than coffee.

Coffee Bar does make its sandwich menu available until shortly before closing time, usually around 10:30.  However the real action is on Thursday and Friday nights, when Radio Africa & Kitchen sets up shop and serves up a spectacular produce-driven meal, accompanied by a variety of African music styles.

Chef Eskender Aseged started doing these nomadic underground dinners when he worked as a waiter.  The effort has bounced around, but now finds a steady home at Coffee Bar every Thursday and Friday night.

Wine of the Week: Les Piliers 2004 Syrah

Posted in : abcd

(added few years ago!)

Wineswire.com - You've heard the canard that red wines must be allowed to breathe for at least an hour before serving if they are to fully reveal their complexity. With many perfectly drinkable reds from every region this is not true. Some wines give their all within a few minutes of opening the bottle. But another class of red wine rewards delayed gratification with a bouquet that blossoms only after it has hobnobbed for a spell with the atmosphere.

This week's wine is among the latter.

Les Piliers 2004 Syrah is made by Michel Gassier's winery at Nimes in the South of France (about $15 at wine shops and big box stores). Its appellation is Costieres de Nimes, which is part of the larger Languedoc region but borders the southern edge of the Rhone, yielding wines that as a group share in both the reserved style of the northern neighbor and the exuberance of its own region. Les Piliers leans more to the Rhone style, favoring complexity above fruit-forward feistiness.

Kate Winslet on Penis Politics

Posted in : abcd

(added few years ago!)

Nightscafe.com - Finally, after much tacky prodding, we got Kate Winslet to fess up on the sexist disrobing policies of Hollywood.

Natch, Winslet continued her award-winning tour last night at the SAG show, picking up Best Supporting Actress, and we couldn't be more thrilled for the über-talented babe.

You all must check out The Reader, in which K.W. fiercely plays a Nazi character—often nude, something she claimed made her "insane" during filming.

"It was just tough," fessed Kate. "I have to disappear into this person and figure out who she is. And I didn't like her all the time. It was hard coming to a place where I understood her. I think it was the most challenging part I've ever been asked to play.

Posted in : abcd

(added few years ago!)

Moviereview 101.com - Three decades after Walter Hill’s cult-classic film “The Warriors” first hit theaters, the Warriors are once again poised to–as one of its most popular lines of dialogue suggests–”come out and plaaaaaay.” This time around, however, the adventures of the New York City gang and its rivals will be unfolding not on the screen, but in the pages of a new comic book series.

As we first reported back in July 2008 (when we debuted the first piece of promo art for “The Warriors”), the 30th anniversary of the film’s release will include the debut of publisher Dabel Brothers’ adaptation of the film, with an eye toward spinning off new stories based on the world of “The Warriors” down the road.

Dealing with winter depression, or SAD

Posted in : abcd

(added few years ago!)

Depression cell.com - Got the blahs? Winter depression is common, accounting for about 10 percent of major depressions. It can run in families, which suggests it has a genetic basis. And it is most prevalent in northern climates, which suggests that a lack of daylight contributes to the problem.

People who are susceptible to winter depression usually develop symptoms every year, starting gradually in late autumn and building up during the winter months. Like other forms of depression, SAD, or seasonal affective disorder, produces sadness, lethargy and fatigue, loss of interest in people and activities,
